Many men from this shire of Woothakata, which Mareeba Shire was known as before 1947, joined the Light Horse Brigade during the first World War.

They proved their horsemanship by chasing and plucking the feather of emus to adorn their hats.

Australian ww2 Slouch Hat

The hats you can see here are typical of the hats bushmen would wear and usually it would be almost falling apart or stitched up a few times before replacement would be bought.
