Train Carriage

Australia’s first rail systems were mostly built when the country consisted of sparsely settled colonies, before they combined to form a Federation of States in 1901.

TThese camp cars were used extensively throughout Queensland, and were an integral component in the development and maintenance of the rail system in Australia. They became the accommodation for spare train crew on long trips and for gangers and fettlers working on the lines.

Early Railways Exhibition

As part of the “Early Railways Exhibition”, the Mareeba Heritage Centre has restored a second class carriage, constructed in Townsville in 1923 and later converted into what was known as a "Camp Car".

Whilst many hundreds of them existed throughout Queensland from the late 19th century, only a few exist today as most were sold for scrap during the second world war or auctioned off to sheep stations as cheap ‘shearers quarters’.
